I have worked in the legal field for 20 years, and here are the best things you can do and should do (as well as everyone else).

1. Never lie.
2. Never, ever be impolite, sarcastic or condescending.
3. If you are pulled over, pull over immediately, stop your car, and then sit still with both hands on the top of the steering wheel in plain view of the officer. Keep your palms open, not clenched around the wheel.
4. When the officer comes to your vehicle, ask for permission to retrieve your license and registration, and then get them slowly.
5. Don't pretend that you don't know why you were stopped.
6. Don't pretend that you didn't know you committed whatever traffic violation you were stopped for.
7. If you are stopped for speeding and the officer asks you if you know how fast you were going, don't lie and say no. Tell him how fast you were going plus two miles an hour, because oftentimes speedometers on our cars are a little off.
8. If you have a good driving record and no criminal record, ask the officer if he will just give you a warning.
9. Say please and thank you.
10. Hope that the officer likes you and is having a good day.
11. If you have a bad driving record or a criminal history, forget it. Just take your lumps and move on.
12. These guys have a job to do, and some of them overdo their job and have an exaggerated sense of power and importance. Don't blame it on all the good officers who do what they do because they want to help people and their community, despite the fact that they are underpaid and verbally abused on a daily basis.

I hope this helps.

Police have a rather simple classification system for people. You are either a criminal, an as shole (that's you in case you are confused), or an upstanding citizen.

If you are a criminal, you are going to jail and just might get beaten or shot in the bargain. If you are an as shole, they are going to make your life miserable right up to what the letter of the law allows. Expect absolutely no slack if you fall into these two categories.

But, if you are an upstanding citizen, it's a totally different story. Cops are there to help you and protect you. They will go out of their way to cut you some slack, often crossing the line of what the law allows in some cases.

So, be an upstanding citizen. You can't fake it really. Cops spend all day long listening to lies and bullshit. They are experts at it and can smell the slightest bit of deception on you. Actually, being sly and manipulative is very, VERY dangerous around cops. You see, as sholes don't usually do this. It's criminals that do this. Being an as shole sucks but the cops aren't likely to kill you. But heaven help you if they think you are a criminal. One wrong move and your in the hospital or dead. You've been warned.

If you know he is goign to pull you over, pull over before he has a chance to get behind you...and wait for him! This will surprize him, he won't expect it. Most people try to pretend as if they've done nothing wrong.
When he asks if you know why he pulled you...it helps if you know the answer. Answer, "Yes, officer, I'm sorry about speeding through that red light....I know there's no excuse for it and I'm not going to try to talk my way out of a ticket, but I was just trying to get to the hospital as fast as I can....my lil boy fell out of a tree and broke his leg and my ex-girlfriend is driving him to the ER right now....(act a lil frazzled...a lil upset...not hysterical, just concerned)
From here it is 50/50. Really, you don't have to lie to get out of the ticket. Just owning up to your crime is usually enough if it isn't too serious...be appologetic and don't ask for the pig to let you off with a warning! This only provokes them. Never ask for anything, it only gives them the chance to say "no."
Police officers are no different than any other person, and manipulation works just as good on them as anyone else. However, their job is to generate cash for the police dept. and court system which is why the pig will probably write you a ticket when, personally, s/he doesn't even want to.

The best thing to do is stay silent. That works best. If they do ANYTHING too you, and you did NOTHING. You have the upper hand. You have to appear as if you did NOTHING to provoke them. If its a routine stop answer questions as briefly as possible providing the least information possible (of course don't be rude either.) If arrested, answer NOTHING without legal counsel, period. They will LIE in the interrogation. They will present fake evidence, FAKE confessions from your mom, dad, grandma and dog. There have been cases where they pay people to act on tape (your own friend for example), and provide you with fake evidence to force a confession out of you. Don't tell'em crap. You have to protect your rights in this country, get a lawyer before answering anything! If the cops ever knock, DON'T answer it. By answering it you give them permission to come in. If they have a warrant they will break the door down so it doesn't matter.

In order to outwit the cop, you first must understand the innerworkings of the cop

Here is the psychological breakdown of cops:

If they are male, they fall into two categories:

They got picked on a lot when they were in high school, so they went into law enforcement to attain the power to get back at the world.

or

They themself were the bullies in high school, they love having power over others, and they pursued a career that provides that power.

Use their thirst for power to your advantage. Act like you are completely at their mercy, and you have the utmost respect for their opinion and their authority. They'll get they're power trip from that, and won't need to throw more tickets at you to prove their authority to themself

(as far as female cops go, they are a wild card - no clue what their deal is) Possibly mention you love your girlfriend or your dog or something???

Treat them with respect, courtsey and politeness. I was pulled over for driving on a closed road and I politly explained to offer that I was very lost and did not mean to be here and he told me how to get where I was going and didn't even give me a warning. In fact, he let me drive the remainder of the closed road.

Most poliemen are honest people trying to protect you. 9 times out of 10, you were doing something illegal and yes, speeding is illegal, so is driving like an a** hole weiving in and out of lanes.

Women ddon't have it easier to, my friend got busted for 79 in a 55 and she cried and cried and the cop just stood there and fined her for speeding.

Since we have seen/heard it all nothing but honesty will help you. And BTW what is a "Follows"? Are you a sheep? You screwed up admit it and move on. Do you charge the threat for a living? Has anyone ever shot a gun at you? And meant to kill you with it? Lighten up boy and be thankful we are around. And I ticket/arrest the ones faster for trying to manipulate me.

Put yourself in their shoes. What do you think they are thinking about what is going on with you? How would you want someone to treat you, given the situation, if the shoe was on the other foot. At the end of the day we are all humans, we all wanted to be treated the same way. If you understand they are doing their job and you make that part of their day as pleasant or easy as possible you might be suprised...

Hi Joe Snow
It is a well known fact that in most places on the Africa continent you just need to hand some money over with your drivers license and or passport and no joking ... the problem vanishes.

Do what I did, make fun of the officer's sexual orientation...call him gay, tell him its time to come out of the closet. Big macho guys like cops and the military hate that kind of thing, it might not get you out of trouble, but I hate cops, and enjoy messing with them. Also I'm a girl, and only the pretty girls have it easier, if your not pretty, you better rely on your wits.
