Yeah, I have noticed about that in most cartoons, how cartoons have only four fingers. They acknowledged that n an episode of The Simpsons, where Lisa opens a book and shows that someday, they will evolve into having five fingers and Bart going "Eww." At least they're aware of it. I don't know why most cartoons have only four fingers? Laziness? Easier to draw than five fingers? A humorous thought is that cartoons are mostly 2D while we are 3D, therefore, they're devolved humans.

They're a lot easier to draw than five fingers. Also, the artist of Mutt & Jeff responded once that he always drew his characters with gloves on because he didn't have to draw small details like wedding rings and fingernails. Just put three parallel lines on the back of the hand, a cuff around the wrist, and voylah! Gloves!

(Btw, I spelled voila as the above, for a joke, and spellcheck accepted it! Is spellcheck sick or has soneone hacked it?)

The animators give their characters four fingers because they don't want to waste the ink from their pens.

I have noticed that. I assume it's just to save time drawing.

I always thought they did that because five fingers where harder to drawl. That's probably how it started out anyway.
