Yahoo is trying to compete with "myspace" (msn) on this, to get position for a trusted online presence, and "home site" for users, to do thier searches (and attendant adverts) host thier chats (and attendant adverts) and host thier email (and attendant advertising). They all want you to "log on", ie know your consumer profile, before giving these services, and ask you for "consumer" details to sign up, to profile you.
MSN, google, yahoo, ntl, theyre all the same. Maybe, all will soon try to charge for sevices. Yahoo already does, with personals. They've already sold this to an american company. Look at the "new" yahoo email, more advertising.
Things for every provider will be changing, yes.
Its all to do with cash, you see.

ignore rumors. when you see an email from yahoo then you believe it.
lots of people throw around these lies and sit back and laugh at you while you are wondering what is going on.

it's all lies. I've got e-mails that yahoo messenger will reduce its users, and that it will cost money.
