I wouldn't worry about scratches on the back of the guitar. Scratches show character. Over time they are bound to happen. However, if they are really bad or really bother you could try these methods of fixing them.
If they are shallow you could try buffing them out with extra fine sandpaper and a bit of water (have you ever wet sanded before?).
If they are through the finish you could rough sand, then wet sand with fine sandpaper, and refinish the back of the guitar.
You don't have to worry about messing up the sound of your guitar unless you do something extremely drastic. If you had an acoustic or hollowbody guitar you would have to be much more careful.
Another option is to cover the scratches with band/music stickers. I'm not a fan of this approach, but it is commonly done.
Good Luck, Rock On!

To do it right, you'd sand it down and repaint it.
To do it cheap and quick, there is stuff for cars that supposedly takes out scratches. It melts the surrounding pain into the scratch, covering it up, but it is not that good. You will see the difference because guitars have a clear coat, so there will be a blemish where you do the cheapy repair.
To do it even cheaper and quicker, use a Sharpie marker. It won't show from a distance.
Those scratches come from belt buckles, coat zippers, and pants buttons usually, so if you have a good paint job you are trying to preserve, be careful of what you wear that is metal when you are playing.

Depends on how deep the scratches? If they're not too deep, try 'Mothers' car polish. It's made to delicately remove scratches without dulling the finish. It the scratches are thru the finish into the wood, it will have to be re-finished by a pro.

First thing I would try is to get a buffer and try that. If the scratches are too deep you may want to think about repainting it. Repainting guitars is EASY. I would try buffing it out first.

How much is it worth? If quite a bit dont try to refinish it yourself. Use a pro. Thats cuz a home grown finish might screw up the sound.

Take it to the shop or polish it.You can get guitar polish at a music center. My sis does that. If that polish doesn't work, take it to the shop unless someone else has a betterplan.

I'd leave them there. I play guitar, and a guitar that looks pretty used is actually a badge of honor. It shows that you're not a poser, that you actually use it.
