August was named after Augustus and he alledgedly wanted it to have the same number of days as July (named after his uncle Julius) and he placed the month where it is in the calendar to mark the death of Cleopatra.

Gaius Octavius, heir to Gaius Julius Caesar and eventually first emperor of Rome.

The Web site below has a good capsule biography of Augustus; if you want to read a better, nearly contemporary account of his life, read Suetonius' "The Twelve Caesars." For a great dramatization of his life and times, see the BBC production of Robert Graves' novels "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God," under the series title "I, Claudius." They're available on DVD through Netflix.

August -- Augustus Caesar's month
Latin Augustus "Augustus"
Latin Augustus mensis "month of Augustus"
Latin sextilis mensis "sixth month"

Sextilis had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long.

Augustus Caesar clarified and completed the calendar reform of Julius Caesar. In the process, he also renamed this month after himself.
