Because 'Dragon's Loft' sounds silly and not very intimidating.
Great programme last night - loved the guy who'd invented the egg cooker. Despite failing to demonstrate that it worked 3 times in a row (the first time forgot to put the egg in, then the next 2 times it came out uncooked), he still got the money. Mind you I agree that its going to be a winner.

A den can be up or down. There are no rules about what sort of entrance there is to a dragon's den. I suspect the stairs are symbolic here, to symbolise the uphill struggle to achieve the goal involved.
