I actually agree with you. I think if you can carry a gun & shoot people, you should be able to drown your sorrows in a pint of beer.
BUT, what I think they should do, is raise the age to recruit to 21, so you guys can be kids a little longer.
Trust me, you will understand this is a few more years or decades. Kids need to be kids longer...

The drinking age was 18 here in my state at one time. It seems that a lower drinking age makes it easier for even younger people to get there hands on alcohol as compared to when it is 21. When I was in the US Army at the young age of 18, alcohol was legally sold to those who were 18, 19 and 20. ON base. The policy was beer and wine only no hard stuff. But I could still get any type of alcohol if I wanted to get it. Life seemed a lot better in the Army if I did not use alcohol.

Move to Quebec , the drinking age is 18 the seed limit is a suggestion and they don't go to war if they don't feel like it.

In Ontario the drinking age is 19 the voteing age is 18 you can drive at 16 and you can join the Army at 16 but I hear they discourage that (still legal but I don't think they will take you) . So no none of it makes sense it never did . I am not sure about the US but here ther problem is that various levels of governemtn are responsible for various age decisions.

Oh and up until recently you could get married at 16 with parental consent - I think thats changed to but a friend of mine dod it in 1988

That exact question was all the rage in the 60s during the Vietnam War (although 18-year-olds were subject to the draft and HAD to go fight in Vietnam unless your name was Bush or Cheney) So most states did lower the drinking age to 18 during the 70s (which was cool for me since I was in college). But you know what happened, kids started driving drunk like crazy and killing themselves and a lot of innocent people. Before long, it was decided that drinking at 18 wasn't such a good idea because 18 year-olds are lousy drivers to begin with. So that's why you have to sneak it until you're 21, even though you could get your butt shot off in the Middle East at a younger age.

This is a stupid arguement in my opinion. I am a Viet Nam vet and we couldn't even vote when we were drafted. You are not being drafted, the military is all volunteer now. It's your choice to serve your country. Heck maybe you should beable to buy any type of drug you want also, you are serving your country afterall. America needs a lot more drunks on the road and causing trouble and death to innocent families ( just a note that my father was killed by a drunk teenager when I was 3yrs. old). I just don't believe most 18 year olds can handle alcohol in a responsible way and proven by statistics compiled by the insurance companies for automobile drivers. So if you think it is so important to beable to drink legally if you're in the military I guess you will have to convice the majority of legislators in the US.

Good question. I'm not from the US and in our country the legal drinking age is 18. But I guess the reason is that 18yr old people are much more easily manipulated into going to war and these days that's very important because it's the voluteers that make the army, while drinking age isn't that important so it's better to keep the young people healthy so that they contribute with their maximum strength in a war. God bless America...

i disagree. step up the legal draft age to 21 before even CONSIDERING dropping the legal age to consume/purchase alcohol to 18!!!!

(MOST) teenage drivers are bad enough, but we really don't need DRUNK teen drivers!

the draft/enlistment age is 18, and there hasn't been a draft in forever. 18 year olds may be old enough to decide to enlist, rather than say, go to college, join the work force, etc, however, they are not MATURE enough to be drinking. for that fact, most 21 year olds aren't mature enough to be drinking.

Most 18 year olds nowadays aren't exactly as "mature" as they were considered in the 50s, 60s. Think about it. At 18 back then, they were getting married, starting families, etc. Currently, 18 year olds still depend on their parents for nearly everything.

(this is in no way meant to be a tirade against teens, it's just my opinion!)

PS: Drunk drivers suck!

If you want to drink beer at 18, join the military. You can be "underage" and in the military and buy beer at the PX legally. This is a bogus argument. I think you're too immature to serve in our military. If you join the military you're allowed to drink a beer and I'll buy it for you.

Remember that "Life Sucks" category you've been hearing about pretty much all your life? well, there ya go...that's where your question gets filed under. Personally I agree with you 100%...if you can put your life on the line for our country and enter into legally binding contracts why can't you be in bars drinking? Actually, I don't know who knows the answer to your question, if anyone! Sad, but true.

I hate alcohol, but I have often wondered that... doesn't seem right, does it. I also have a problem with a couple being married for years with a couple kids and not able to have a glass of wine with dinner legally. Oh well.
