Looked at replacements, but the shower knobs on the new faucets aren't located in the same position. Does it matter?

Depends on where the faucet is placed. If the faucet is on the tub the new one may not fit there.

I would think that as long as all the stems of them are in the same spots, that t would work. If not, you will have to put in new holes to put the knobs through and that can be major work. They should be able to help you at the local hardware store where you looked at the new faucets at... just ask them...

The internal valve should be fine, buy new valve stems and new handles and you accomplish the same thing for a fraction of the cost and it is much easier to do. Here is a link telling you how to remove the old valve stems. Take one to your local hardware store and they will replace them with what you need. The handle selection is almost infinite. http://www.ehow.com/how_117462_repair-tub-shower.html
