I've been getting a lot of bloody noses since I've been pregnant. I know they say that this is something common in pregnant women, but are there any remedies? I sometimes get them at work, and I have to stop working and tend to this. Is there anything to help this? Thanks!

Is it common to have nosebleeds during pregnancy?
Yes.

Minor nosebleeds are common and harmless, although you may find them inconvenient and even embarrassing. Pregnancy can cause the blood vessels in your nose to expand, and your increased blood supply puts even more pressure on those delicate veins, causing them to rupture easily.

You're especially likely to have a nosebleed when you have a cold or sinus infection or when the membranes inside your nose dry out, as they do in cold weather, air conditioned rooms, airline cabins, and other dry environments.

What to do:
When your nose starts to bleed, remain seated, keep your head higher than your heart, and put pressure on the bleeding nostril for five to ten minutes (use a watch — it's longer than you think). Using your thumb and the side of your bent index finger, firmly pinch together the whole lower soft part of your nose and exert pressure against the bone of your face.

Can I do anything to avoid them?

• Drink extra fluids to help keep all your tissues, including the mucous membranes, well hydrated.

• Blow your nose gently. Aggressive blowing can lead to nosebleeds.

• Try to keep your mouth open when you sneeze.

• Avoid dry air, especially in wintertime or in dry climates, by running a humidifier inside your house and not overheating your bedroom.

• Use a lubricant to prevent nasal dryness. Some experts recommend petroleum jelly. Others suggest a special water-based nasal lubricant made for this purpose, which is available over the counter at pharmacies. Saline nasal sprays or drops can help, too.

• Don't overuse medicated nasal sprays or decongestants. They can dry out and further irritate your nose.

Try taking some extra iron. Chelated iron is best....NOT the prescription stuff the doc would give you. Go to the health store and ask about chelated iron supplements. They are less likely to make you constipated and are better absorbed by your body. I took blackstrap molassass iron caplets.

Try sleeping with a humidifier on. Maybe your home is too dry.

Yes, I had the same....sleep with a humidifier, your capillaries are getting dry and more blood rushing about the body...avoid caffeine or limit it as much as possible.

Maybe you should have your blood pressure taken...bleeding noses are a sign of high blood pressure

This happens to me too so I asked my dr, she said to buy nasal drops just to ease the dryness, but you can help it, this is caused by your hormones.

You may be becoming anemic. Are you taking your prenatal vitamins. Ask your OB if you should take extra iron.
