A friend of mine has wood milling capabilities... he wants me to find a piece of wood that he can turn it into a cutting board for my kitchen.

I am looking for a variety of wood types that are safe for working with food. Does Anybody have any suggestions?

While I use them, I've never made one. But then, someon else has -- so check with them! Follow the first link below and get all the info!!

The second link was one I found that had a lot of facts about keeping a board clean and why wooden board were actually cleaner and safer than plastic -- thought you might like to have that as well.

Good luck and hope the project turns out well!!

Almost all of the original and the really high end "Butcher Block" counter tops are make of Beach wood because of the density of the wood and the myriad of colors it naturally comes in. Wood is naturally germ resistant and cured Beach is really hard and tough but will take a really great finish with no staining required (or allowed around a food preparation area)

If you are trying to use a single piece of wood, it will probably crack.

Most cutting boards are glued up, and the best have the end grain for the cutting surface since it's more resisitant to wear and moisture.

Forget about wood. It harbors germs. Use polycarbonate. I am sure your friend can mill that too

I think Maple is the best choice. Price wise and for availability.
