Sadism/masochism is a perfectly legitimate activity as long as it is performed with the consent of all parties involved. It might appear to be strange, but it can actually be exhilarating.

Part of the appeal is that the application of pain that is not damaging (spanking, for example) is that the nerves affected send signals to the brain, which responds in part with the production of endorphins. These endorphins work on the pleasure centres of the brain, which can produce a state of elation. If enough are produced, the masochist can literally go into an altered state of awareness, something of a natural high.

The sadist can also experience a natural high as well as the aggressiveness of applying pain onto another can stimulate the pleasure centres as well, although I'm not sure about the whole process. Putting the two together, a mutually beneficial experience comes about.

Obviously it's not for everyone as likely most people will overrule these chemical processes with other thoughts such as fear. However, for those that can experience the exhilaration of S/M, it can be a very moving experience, and for some, one of amazing intimacy.

I think for S&M you really have to trust the person, and it isn't for everyone, I can't imagine submitting completely to anyone, but alot of people seem to enjoy it.
To each their own
