I have very irregular periods and we are not able to conceive. I wanted to know how many different types of medication/treatment is there for me? Is there still hope? Am I ever going to be able to have a baby? Sometimes I only get my period two times a year and to be honest it never bothered me before nor did I care about it. But now we want to have a baby and of course we are having a major problem. It is very depressing--Cause you feel like a loser. My doctor prescribed me Metformin (But due to my elevated liver) I am not able to take it. (I live in Chicago---Can anyone recommend me a good doctor that can actually help us and give us hope!!) I am not sure what to do...She also prescribed me Prenatal pills to take now---How important is it to take the pills now? Will it make me gain weight? What is the benefit of taking the prenatal pills?
Thanks in advance !!

If he put you on metformin then he's probably assuming you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), which is the number one cause of infertility in child bearing aged women. I have it, too. I am able to tolerate the metformin, but there are other drugs you could ask him about whether they would cause you a problem: both these are inulin sensitizing medications
avandia
avandamet (has metformin in it, so it's probably a no-no)
actos
And then there are plain old fertility drugs, too:
clomid probably the most common for PCOS'ers.

A more invasive option is ovarian drilling, which takes away some of the cysts (which are just immature follicles that didn't get released, remember all those missed periods? those cysts happen when you don't ovulate). Ovarian drilling isn't a permanent fix, because the cysts will come back, but it can make you ovulate on your own for a few cycles.
Are you overweight? Losing weight singlehandedly made me get pregnant (on accident!), but losing weight is very difficult with PCOS, since the insulin and blood sugar levels are messed up. Ovarian drilling doesn't appear to work as well in overweight women for some reason.

BTW, even if you weren't trying to get pregnant, something needs to be done b/c its not safe to go without having regular shedding of the lining that builts up. Even if you don't ovulate, that lining still builds up, building up and up over time puts you at major risk for endometrial cancer. So...later on when you're not trying, go on the pill, to make sure it gets shed frequently, though you can then choose, too, to only have one every 3 months. The lining while on the pill is thinner so this is ok.

To lose weight is tricky with PCOS, you'll need some medical help and very VERY low carb diet. The only carbs to eat are whole grains and fruits and vegetables, low glycemic index foods.

Do some research, there's more and more stuff out there nowadays about PCOS, even though they can't make it go away yet. Losing weight made my symptoms subside...until I got pregnant and some dumbo Dr. took me off my metformin. I gained 70lbs. back and now nothing working. Oh well.
good luck!

P.S. You need to be seeing a reproductive endocrinologist, not a regular Dr. or ob/gyn.

If you are not having periods, you are not ovulating. You need to get a regular cycle going. Most times birth control pills will start your periods if you are not getting them. I would indeed take the vitamines, they are good for you. But the first thing I would do is go to another doctor. Ask them about starting you on some birth control pills. Oh and the vitamines will not make you gain weight.

try going to another doctor, maybe an ob/gyn or a fertility specialist. a number of things can cause infertility, fibroids are a good example, and don't despair.. it my not be you! even with you irregular periods... get your partner tested too.
there's NO WAY anyone can dianose you without a thourough check up.

prenatal pill will not make you gain weight..they just give you extra nutrients that you would need to get pregnant...depending on your financial status you could do a number of things...there is artificial insemination...In vitro fertilization... adoption... or a surrogate mother
