That's no so easy to answer. Both party's have moderates that tend to overlap in beliefs. Look at Republican McCain and at the Democratic Senator from Connecticut.

A clearer distinction is to ask, what is the difference between a liberal and a Conservative. A liberal believes they need to run the government and control every aspect of your life. A Conservative believes lives are best when the government leaves people alone to run their own lifes.

Conservatives believe is liberty. That means people can succeed or fail on their own.

Liberals believe that anyone who succeeds needs to have some of their earnings taken from them and given to less successful people. This is called redistribution. It is accomplished by means of raising taxes. Liberals always raise taxes. Tax revenues go down because the economy slows down. Conseratives lower tax rates and the economy speeds up and tax revenues rise.

Never Fails. See Carter and Clinton with tax rate increases and a slower economy. Then Bush lowers rates and the economy comes back. Never Fails.

The social security system is heading for massive problems but the Liberals would rather stop anyone from fixing it if it means Conseratives would also get credit.

Liberals believe they won the last 2 elections and would rather help our enemies than to stand with Pres Bush. Conseratives know we are fighting global Islamic terrorism. Liberals think there are no problems and would rather fight the President.

The Republicans won the last two elections because they appeal to Conseratives and to Moderates. Democrats lost the last two elections because the Liberals have taken over the Democratic party, (see Michael Moore, Dr Dean and Harry Reid), and Moderates will not vote with Liberals.

There are less than 100 days before the Congressional elections. Liberals claim they will take Congress. I doubt it. We will see!

So the communists werent trying to mold the world into their perfect view?

But to answer your question: (Keep in mind that I am speaking for the now. A couple of centuries ago, the conservatives would have been monarchists and the liberals anarchists)

A true conservative beleives in a small government. He beleives in the enlightenment ideas that government is at the will of the people. He beleives in capitalism. He thinks that governemnts main job is for defense, and anything else can be done better in the provate sector. He follows a strict interpretation of the constitution. He favors states rights over the the federal government. Fewer laws are better. He believes in personal responsibiltiy and independece, such that you rely on the government for next to nothing. He favors lower taxes.

The true liberal belives that it is the governemnts job to take care of the people. THey favor lots of laws and regulations and taxes. They think the Constitution should be interpreted however you feel like it.

Republicans today are conservative with more than a dash of christianity thrown in. Conservatives wouldnt be against abortion, but the christians are.

Democrats are liberal. THey also beleive it is their job to step in and make everything "fair" They dont particularly like the second amendment, or the first, when it comes to religion (think, ACLU vs. Christianity) or free speech (Political Correctness, anyone?). THey currently lack any kind of ideas. The only thing they have done in the past few years is complain.

I am a "student" of The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity by Carlo M. Cipolla. From this, I conclude that overall, democrats are "helpless" and republicans are "bandits". I wish there was a party that I could consider "Intelligent". Since there is no party of the intelligent, the next best thing is to avoid the stupid and choose between the less helpless democrat or the less bandit like republican. By the way, neo-cons and marxist are both stupid in different ways.

There really isn't that much difference anymore.
Reading their platforms will give you an idea what they SAY, but not what they DO. It's mostly which lobbyist is giving the best parties, and the biggest yachts.
Lobbyists should be illegal. The legislature should be representing THE people, not HIS people. They are lobby-whores.
We need to have a system where there can be lots of parties. It is so hard to get a thrid party on the ballot. It is almost a monopoly.
Read about the Green Party and the Libertarian Party.
Be an educated VOTER!
I like most of Superman's ideas, but he is too long-winded, and hysterical.
