Carter left because he missed his girlfriend, Kem, who was also the mother of their deceased child. Also, he wanted to continue his work in Africa (which is where he met Kem).

Because the africa shows he starred in had nothing to do with ER and the other doctors I assume. Can't really remember.

I was hoping Carter's absence to be a temporal one. However, he did leave to Africa to work there. Prat joined him in a couple of episodes.
