Measure the vertical distant from the center line of the roof to where the slope meets the wall, measure the run from outside wall to the centerline on the horizontal plane.

If A vertical distance is 8 foot and horizontal distant is 12' you have an 8/12 pitch. if the run is 24' and the rise is 8' you have a 4/12 pitch.

Rise over run, in other words, for every 12 inches of vertical rise you have so many inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch is a roof that has 6 inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
