When watching a movie how do you judge whether someone is a good actor? And what defines bad acting for you?

I think if someone is a truly great actor, then they will be able to pull off more characters than just one. For instance, Johnny Depp has starred in just about every genre of film, and is able to pull off every single one of the characters he plays. All of his portrayals are distinct and believable. Hence, he is a great actor. This isn't to say that actors who play the same types of characters aren't GOOD, per se, but they can only BE good if they play that same character, and thus aren't truly great actors.

Bad acting is when I'm watching a film and I'm thinking about the actor him/herself, rather than the character he/she is playing, while at the same time having no sympathy for said character. This is because I can't actually SEE that character and sympathize with him, I can only see the actor. This is the reason I don't like watching films with Will Ferrell, because I only see Will Ferrell and not his character. Sometimes an actor will be so huge that thinking about them instead of the character is almost unavoidable. However, I think an actor's ability should be able to work around that to a certain extent.

A good actor is convincing as the character they're playing. They need to be a natural and know how people behave in real life. A great actor is one who can play a variety of characters and roles to the point that you don't know what the real personality of the actor is. I.E. Johnny Depp; Elijah Wood.

What really defines it for me is whether I believe that this guy is who his character is. For example, when I watch an earlier Tom Cruise movie, I never can believe for a second that he is a bartender, or a race car driver, or a fighter pilot. He just seems like some guy reading lines and wearing a costume. In his later films, I really believe while I am watching that he is a timecop or in Eyes Wide Shut that he is in love with Nicole Kidman. Now that's acting!
