Does anybody know where I can find information (websites, articles, etc.) about self defense laws when using non-deadly force. I would like to know particulary for the state of Michigan, but anywhere else will do too!

In July '06 Michigan (MI) enacted legislation that clarifies when a person can use deadly force in self-defense during break-ins, car jackings, and other violence outside of the home. The law makes it clear that when attacked that a person need not try to flee. The law also shields the defender from lawsuits by the attackers and their families.

This is not where I got the above info. but a website for you to check out nonetheless. http://www.glsda.org/

Check this one out - look at P314. http://www.icle.org/michlaw/rules/legis/legis-new.htm

Try your states own website. Most of them have all the laws so you can see what they actually say. I know in most states, self defense is only applicable when you have no other way out of the situation. If you become stuck in a corner and the only way out is to go through the person, most courts will take your side. However, they almost always have to have been physically attacking you for this to work. If they have you in a corner by calling you names, you can't just hit them and claim self defense. Also, you lose the self defense claim if you continue hitting your attacker once they are down. At that point, you get nailed for assault. I was in a situation once where the only way out was going through the guy. I knocked him down and told him not to get back up. He did. I knocked him down and repeated my self. Same thing happened. Three more times until someone stepped in to stop it. I was told I was lucky that I had told him to stay down and if I hadn't, I would have been arrested for aggravated assault. This may or may not be the case in Michigan though....

Most weapons you carry for self defense are actually putting you in more harm. If you have a weapon, someone can easily grab it from your hands and use it against you. At the age of 15, you shouldn't be going anywhere that is so dangerous that you feel the need to carry a weapon.
