Well, some have said gas should only cost about $1.80 per gallon if we removed the excessive fees to pay the suits.

If we nationalised oil, removes those high paying jobs, and kept oil non profit to keep the prices low, wouldnt the auto industries be in better shape? wouldnt the economy boom?

I share your frustration about the gas prices. However, this is not a reason to socialize our country. We are a country of capitalism. Government is the problem, not the solution. Why don't we start letting private companies start buying and drilling here at home? This would slash prices right away. Let free enterprise work its magic. We don't need more socialism. We need more common sense in D.C.

Theoretically this could work. But it doesn't sound like a long-term solution to me.

If this were to happen, you would have no further exploration for oil, since there is no longer any money to fund it. Then what we DO have will dry up very quickly. The laws of supply and demand would drive the price back up to where it was.

A much more logical solution would involve reducing our consumption of oil by enforcing mileage standards and encouraging people to use public transit. It is only when demand goes down that the price will also go down.

Nationalizing the oil wouldn't work because we don't have enough oil to nationalize. We would still be dependent on foreign oil which is currently about 80% of our national supply. Nationalizing our oil supplies would actually increase the price of oil. Not only would we have to create a huge government bureacracy to run the oil facilities but we would also have to pay each of the employees.

This has never worked anywhere in the world - And yes it has been tried - your gnashing and oil / bush hating has no relevant
value to this republic- you are the typical liberal who plays victim
and social engineer when things seemly don't go your way.
Why don't liberals invest ,invent, patent ,market and warranty a new invention that will help. But liberals never do this because they can't - they are social engineers not real ones.

This "record profit" BS is all hyped data taken out of context. It turns out that, in one particular way of measureing it, big oil is makeing profits. However, most ways of calculating it find that it is just better than breaking even.

If you want to be mad at someone, let it be the banks. THey make consistently high profits.

theyre just waiting for ethanol to be more widely available, then it will be highly probably for gas prices to go down, but by that time, everything else has creeped up so slowly that we'll b complaining about the price of paper plates or diapers or anything else there is to cry about.

Agreed.

They are making record profits.

It's sad to see them making so much while the prices go so high.
