The saying refers to the true nature of love which is not controlling...hence letting something go that you love; if it comes back to you, it's yours. If not, it never was. In terms of life being short and holding onto it...it refers to hanging on to the passions of youth; the curiosity, the desire to change things for the better. It's the quality of not going gently into that good night , but raging against the dying of the light. Not surrendering to death (in all its forms) but fighting tooth and nail to get every marrow of life out of our allotted time.Get it?

Never heard it said that way.I have heard if you love something let it go free and if it comes back it was meant to be if not than it wasn't. Like the saying "you have all the rest of your life to do so and so." No one knows how long or short their life is going to be.

Because no one really knows anything about love. It is confusing to us all.

My new found theory is to just wing it. You are bound to get your heart broken anyway, so take risks and earn that pain!

If you love something you set it free
If it comes back to you it's yours.
If it doesn't it never was.

This was on a poster in my room a long time ago.
and this is how that went.
