You need to be able to crawl in and out of the birthing tub, and an epidural will not allow you to do that. Also, in order to have an epirdural you will have to be at a hospital and most hospitals do not allow water births. And Vice Versa. In order to have a water birth you will probably need to carry out the blessed event ,either, at home with a midwife, or in a birthing center. Neither of which can do an epidural.

You can't have them at the same time. If you have an epidural you'll be stuck in the bed.

You could labor in the water for a while and then plan to get out for an epidural before you are complete.

Or you could take a "wait and see" approach and see how you're doing in the water and decide if you think you still want the epidural.

I've had two waterbirths and the relief from the birth tub is really amazing.

Of course...all this depends on *if* your hospital has birth tubs and *if* they only allow you to labor in them or *if* they will actually allow the baby to be born in the water. (Some hospitals will insist that you get out before the baby is born.)

From what I understand the water birth will help ease your pain tremendously. If you can go without the epidural, more power to you! But you should really consult your doctor.. because with an epidural you will have to be hooked up to an IV. Good luck with your birth experience.
