It's just the same expression that is used when you say your are going to "take" a walk or "take" a shower. You're not really "taking" anything. It's just an expression which we use in the same way as "doing".
Therefore, by saying "I'm going to take a dump". What you really mean is "I'm going to do a dump".

no! when they say "I am gonna go take a dump" they are useing a different present tense. You dont leave a dump because you never actually had the dump in the first place, so how can u leave something you dont have?
