A swimming pool is to be dug out of a courtyard which is 20 yards by 35 yards. The builder decides to leave a border area all around 5 yards wide. What will be the surface area of the swimming pool in square yards?

Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism = 2ab + 2bc + 2ac but it doesnt include the height in the word problem, so is there any other way?

Easy.

If you need a border of 5 yards all around then the pool's dimensions will be 15 yards x 30 yards which gives 450 square yards in area.

20 - 5 = 15
35 - 5 = 30

30 x 15 = 450
