Why can't people start questioning more in order to get to the truth. Its fine if people just want a quiet life but when totally ignorant people start spouting their totally unfounded opinions it kinda annoys me. Is that reasonable?

anchan: I can guarantee you this question of mine is far from unfounded and is certainly not based solely on what I see on here! I base it on what I see, hear and come across everyday from listening to people talking and from discussing issues with people from many different walks of life.

amber_damber: Yeah I'm English too and I don't believe it all but seriously, open your eyes! We're most certainly a dying breed!

You are SO right!
People get their opinions from News papers!
I think the FUNNIEST was when the press got everyone ranting against Bio-engineering! Several weeks later, a survey of 10,000 people revealed that over 70% of people in the survey thought that an ordinary tomato did not have genes, but a GM one did.
My current pet gripe is the complete ignorance about Islam, there is just SO MUCH rubbish spouted by the idiots that read the headlines and the first paragraph of each article, then file that as "their opinions".

People believe what their media spouts. The Brits are good people. If I had to live anywhere in the world it would be with the Brits or the Aussies. Speaking their mind I appreciate as i would from any friend. It does not mean I have to agree, which sometimes I don't. We believe things to be a certain way because of our media. I see very little with my own eyes. I read the net, but that's all information that is not verifiable. So I must develop my opinions from the media, and so must the Brits and everybody else. Media thrives on one fact. No one wants to hear good news. People like dirt and controversy much better. So yes...in this case...you should want to shoot the messenger.

Respectfully,
Tom

i for one am a Brit and i don't believe everything i read or see in the media as i know full well the amount of bullsh!t that is reported to be real.
i have a lot of friends who work in the media for various newspapers and TV channels.
there were a few cases of journalistic lies i know of first hand as it involved people i know.
here are a few examples of the media trying to make something sound more interesting or twisting the truth..

1.. there was a case involving a sunday tabloid (the worse kind) where they reported that a guy who was arrested for a crime (not saying what it was) was a criminal genius and who was a deadly blackbelt martial artist! I'd known him for years and he was as thick as sh!t, if he put two and two together, he'd be confused! deadly martial artist? first sign of trouble and he pees his pants!

2.. another tabloid did a story on a guy who WAS a genius but suffered from a condition that made his face swell up and he was confined to a wheelchair. the story was meant to be about him, how clever he was and how he'd created inventions that helped disabled people. they interviewed him and didn't even talk to his wife (he is married to a very good looking model).. the headline that came out read "beauty and the beast" and reported that his wife was behind the inventions! they decided to make up the story and printed it as if they had interviewed the wife..

3.. i did a reconstruction for a documentry about a deadly desease only to find out that it was shown as the real thing!
the character that i portrayed actually died, it wasn't until i was sat down on the tube the next day after it was broadcast that i realised what happened (people were muttering and pointing at me saying that i was suppossed to be dead!)

i was asked by a friend who worked for a certain newspaper if i was willing to sell my story (and video) about a party i had with some (now famous) friends.. I told him to f@ckoff!

some people either don't have the time or are too lazy to find out if it's real or not..
don't believe everything you see or hear.. most of it is bullsh!t..
then again, a lot of people think TV is real!!!!! weak minds.....

I actually think the US are much worse at that sort of thing. I have had many an argument with an American who only seem to come back with the opinions based on the same old government propaganda that the rest of the world considers laughable.
The difference is, in America you get popular 'news' channels like Fox News full of opinion, innuendo and outright lies and in the UK, that sort of thing just wouldn't be tolerated. Much of the TV news is reported by the BBC - who will always give you straight down the line news and leave the opinions up to the individual.

Because they've been through many a war and have seen propaganda first hand. It kinda annoys me that you call other people ignorant and no I don't think you are reasonable. You are entitled to your own opinion, and so is everyone else. Calling others ignorant does not make you a tolerant person. Maybe you want to be the dictator of a democratic dictatorship, there are many of them in the world. My take on it is that if you don't like the politics of your country, then educate yourself in politics and change it from within, or go to a country you feel more in tune with.

I think we (well most I hope) know that the media is 80% garbage, but there is so much going on in our personal lives that we just don't find the time - or at least that's the excuse that we make - to study the important issues and demand the truth. Also we all think "well if no-one else will complain, why should I?" which of course isn't entirely true...(you for example!)

The integrity of british media i.e the BBC is second to none.

Only on matters of extreme security does the uk government try to censor the BBC and usually unsucsessfully.

No matter where you are in the world you can get BBC world service. This is why British espionage is reveered as the best.

If you think the quality or content of british media is bad try living somewhere else. Only then will you appreciate how good and well informed we really are!

Don't you think that assuming the majority of Brits believe everything they hear could also be ignorant? You could be right and I do understand where you're coming from (the media certainly does bring us down), but I prefer to think that there are a lot of free-thinking, intelligent people out there, too. It makes me feel happier to choose my own reality! Just a thought...

'spouting their totally unfounded opinions' - straight from the horses mouth! Have you actually spoken with the majority of Brits, or is this just an assumption based on what you read here?

People believe what they hear in the media as apart from in their local area it is the only way they gain information thus it is the only knowledge they can get of things. If you would start demanding the media tell the truth they would counter by saying what they provide is the truth.
