is it your sun sign, your moon sign or you rising sign that dictates your personality. I'm a taurus and to be honest I feel I have very few taurus characteristics.

They all influence your personality to some extent but there are other factors to create emphasis on certain planets and signs and houses.

A cookie cutter readout from a computer won't tell you that though. A professional Astrologer can help you to determine why you lack Taurus expression in your chart. It could be your Sun is in the 12th house, which can "hide" it or it could be aspected by Saturn, which can "limit" it. Or may be something else entirely. We would have to look at your whole chart and analyze it to determine why.

Sun - inner self, ego, personality
Moon - emotions, domestic urge, nurturing urge
Mercury - reasoning ability, intellectual urge
Venus - affection, social urge
Mars - energy, aggressive urge
Jupiter - expansion, protective urge
Saturn - the teacher, urge for security
Uranus - the awakener, freedom urge
Neptune - intuition, escapist urge
Pluto - transformation, destroying and rebuilding urge

Once they are placed in signs they can become stronger or weaker depending on many factors:

What is the shape of the chart? Splash, Bundle, Bucket, Fan (Sling), See-Saw, Locomotive, Splay, Bowl, etc?

Dignities - Dignified, Exalted, Detriment or Fall.

Signs can be classified as: Fire, Earth, Air or Water and: Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable. Does the chart have a preponderance of one element or one quality. That makes a difference on how you interpret.

Once the planets are placed in houses they can become stronger or weaker depending on many factors.

Houses in order of strength, strongest to weakest: Angular (1, 4, 7,10), Succedent (2, 5, 8, 11) and Cadent (3, 6, 9, 12).

Planets in the first house, particularly on the Ascendant are strong. Planets in the 10th, particularly the MC are strong. The most elevated planet is strong.

Where is the chart ruler and what aspects does it make? The chart ruler is the planet that rules the sign on the first house cusp, the Ascendant. ie, If Leo is on the Ascendant the chart ruler is the Sun.

Is the chart bottom (Northern Hemisphere) or top heavy (Southern Hemisphere)? Is the East (right) or West (left) emphasized? What quadrant (1, 2, 3 or 4) is emphasized?

Is there Mutual Reception by Sign or by House? Sun in Cancer and Moon in Leo is an example or mutual reception by sign.

Is there an aspect pattern emphasizing planets? Grand trine, kite, yod, grand cross, t-square, grand sextiles, mystic rectangles, boomerangs etc?

Is there a stellium? 3 or more planets in the same house or sign?

Is there an intercepted planet and/or an intercepted sign in the chart? They start out weak and can get stronger as time goes by.

Is there an unaspected planet or heavily aspected planet?

Are there linked houses? two houses in a row with the same sign on their cusps?

Are there retrograde planets? The internalize their energies rather than outwardly express them.

Predominance or absence of an aspect? Conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles?

What sign, house are the lunar nodes in and what aspects do they both make?

And so on...

All these along with free will determine who you are and what your personality is like.

Are you a cusp person? That means were you born in between signs? Like I was born just when Pisces changed over to Aries. So I'm mixed. Also, my moon is in Leo...which dictates your emotional nature, and my ascending sign is on a cusp of Libra and Scorpio. (I'm a mess by the way). Also, if you have your "houses" done, you can find out what planets are where. And make sure that someone who really knows how to do astrological charts has done yours...I hear that Eastern astrology can be more exacting than Western astrology. Then there's astrology readings that are calculated at the moment of your conception. Not your birth. Can be complicated. That's why every single person is a unique individual..like snowflakes. im not an expert but i read A LOT and from my interpretation its the ascendant and the sun sign that work hand in hand to really establish your mannerisms and characteristics. the ascendant is like the sun sign but it pertains to how the outside world views you and not so much how you act which is what the sun sign is. however there are several other factors that come into play when discovering ones personality in temrs of astrology.
