If you install Internet Security Suite from Computer Associates, it includes a parental control feature called "Blue Coat K9." From the K9 website, you are able to view internet events log. If you know the time a virus was downloaded to your computer, you should be able to trace the virus source by viewing the events log on K9.
The Security Suite from CA is probably the best one out there (my opinion) and this newer K9 feature watches pretty much every place your internet users visit.

I believe that we DO have that software. Using Mac addresses, tracers like Visual Route, whatever the crime labs have for sophisticated software, and some good detectives, most everything can be traced !! Perhaps a better question would be "WHY DON'T WE (The powers that be) USE IT????"

The hackers have thought of this.

They use public PC's to infect random IP addresses.

Aslo, as soon as a PC is downed, any chanch of back tracking is lost

also many come form off shore and there is nothing anyone can do about it

Actually, it's pretty simple to do, but all it's likely to lead you to is another bot-infected box on the net, not the actual source of the virus itself.

We have, but it's not open for the public. If it was, themake would be harassed and who's to blame? The government of course.
