As many people can tell you, languages are a very impressive thing to have on your CV - whether it is a job to do with linguistics or not because it shows your ability to learn and understand somethiing as difficult as a language.
They will get you a lot further with people from different countries, like in French restaurants. They also open up your job opportunities and can actually improve your English.

I will tell you my story...Once upon a time..I was a music education major and in my "singing" class we studied some linguistics to help us with the foreign language songs. I really didn't understand it, but I copied down a bunch of notes for future refrence. A year later...and now a Spanish major, I had to take Spanish linguistics and I will tell you...if it weren't for my previous experience with the music class, I would have been completely lost. It also helped me a lot to better pronounce the words. There were a lot of letter that I was pronouncing correctly.. but I was not using the correct part of the mouth..tongue, etc to do it so when I began using the correct way it made it easier to make the correct pronunciation. It really helps if you are going to be a language teacher (even in your own language), if you are going to teach singing, if you are going to be a speech pathologist.. but if you are a scientist, or an athlete..really don't waste your time
