Yes, you can buy them and I just saw plenty of women wearing them at the Renaissance Festival. Here's one site that sells corsets:

I'm sure you can buy them, but it rather depends on what kind of corset you're looking for. The decorative kind that are fashionable today, or a true corset like was worn a long time ago, usually made with whalebone where you got laced up into it for the express purpose of making you smaller than you really are.

The reason those corsets went away is b/c they were uncomfortable. More importantly, they were dangerous. Ever wonder why historial books (fiction and nonfiction alike) always talk about women swooning or fainting? It's believed to be because you can not take deep breaths while stitched into a corset. Your lungs can't expand properly.. Kind of like breathing through a straw. If you got excited and tried to breathe heavily through a straw, you'd pass out. Just can't get enough air in fast enough. Also, being squashed so tightly into one literally made your organs change position, vying for a place to be.

You can't really make one because, in order to work properly, it takes a lot of support and strength. You can buy them through the sources listed by other posters, but you should know that they are VERY uncomfortable and can damage your internal organs if you wear them too often or too tightly.

Corsets were invented in the 16th century to shape women into what was fashionable at the time. It was also the only breast support available at the time. Bras weren't invented for a few hundred more years. That's why they went away - they're hot, uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous. The modern brassiere is so much more supportive and cozy.

I bought a corset not too long ago for a Halloween costume, I was a barmaid, and thus needed the perfect hourglass. Of course I couldn't manage it on my own, but the one I bought at Dillards was pretty comfortable considering what it was. Stretchy, silky material with a row of eye hooks down the back and flexible plastic rods that didn't poke you too much, it was nice. I do like the shape corsets give you, but I don't think the metal ones or even the ones that you need another person to tighten the laces for should come back. Those are just plain painful!

Corsets as real 'support wear' are likely hard to find, but I know you get can get them at stores that sell 'Goth' or similar clothing (I have seen them at "Hot Topic").

Also look in lingerie stores. The ones at the chain stores (Fredricks and Victoria's Secret) are largely just for show. Look at 'local' stores, they will have a selection of corsets that are a little more authentic.

I am certain there are also several sources online. However, my wife says that being able to try them on is really important. Size and the shape can be very inconsistent.

Corsets went away as they were a health hazard. Between fainting from lack of oxygen and lack of food, they unnaturally compreseed the body, causing problems with interal organ damage.

And the fashion of a tiny waist was no longer the fashion.

i hope you just mean the corset to be pretty and not for its real use. When women used them for their real purpose, it caused skeletal damage around the ribcage. that causes a lot of other problems also. If you want it to be like the real ones, just dont get it too tight and you will be ok. You can find them online, even at wal mart or kmart(mostly around valentines day though)

You could more than likely get corsetts through a lingerie store or catalogue. You could make your own, but it would be difficult, with the lacings and stays in them. And they probably went away because they are horrible, deforming, breath-sucking pieces of clothing which were expendable! LOL

I think you can buy them. I'm pretty sure you can make them. They went away because.... well.... it's pretty obvious; you've got to pull the corset strings really tight and practically cut off your air supply. Nobody is going to want to wear a corset when she can just get a good ol' bra.
