Canadian dollars are accepted everywhere, from street vendors to the poshest hotels. US travellers cheques can be a hassle, because not all places will take them and you'll end up having to cash them at a bank and getting Canadian dollars.
But rather than travel with a wad of cash, keep some 'walking around' money in your pocket, to pay for small purchases, cab fare, bus fare, snacks, etc. and put whatever you can on your VISA or MasterCharge, or American Express card, and pay it after you return home. If you need more cash while you're here, you can always hit an ATM. There's no problem getting Canadian dollars from an ATM if you have an American credit card. The system works around the world, and we've used it everywhere from Spain to New Zealand.

You can change your money - get a small amount of Canadian money for cabs, coffee etc...but I generally use credit or my bank/debit card. Both work well and the exchange rate is good for the dollar (for a change)
If you need more canadian funds you can go to an ATM - it's really no problem at all.
Travelers checks are fine, but I don't think they are worth the effort.

travellers checks are a pain, no one carries them anymore b/c debit and credit cards are more convienent. Plus you get hit up 2 times on the exchange rate!

I do not agree with xaosdragon.
He may work in a Canadian Bank but, apparently he hasn't tried to buy Canadian Dollars at a US Bank - it's a pain in the a**.
I much prefer to change my US dollars at a Canadian Bank - very convenient and business like.

either..most of canada will accept US currency as a courtesy only--it's not legal tender here--or you can exchange travellers cheques...the rates may vary depending on where you use your money however.
