Slacker or not, it's nice to get paid to do nothing. You do however need to look out for your own future. Is there really anywhere to go with this company? If the answer is yes, and you like your job, then stay put. If not, find something else. Just a warning, I have worked in a mind-numbing job for 5 years now and I am SO burned out that I am looking for jobs even if they pay less just to get out!

Yes, you're being a slacker, but I find it unbelievable that a Wall Street type firm wouldn't realize that you're not doing anything productive. Personally, it would drive me nuts to sit around and do nothing, regardless of the money. But, boy, would I have a hard time leaving a job that lets me sit around and surf the 'net for six figures a year.
The downside is that if your bosses wise up to your current status and dismiss you, what in the world are you going to put on your resume as to what you accomplished at your past job? That could be a problem.
If you decide to leave, could you recommend me for your job? ;)

If I understand you correctly, you want to know if you should look for another job where you will make several hundred thousand dollars a year, but will have to actually produce something.
Perhaps your level of advancement is right in line with the level of commitment and initiative you have devoted to your present position. Are you a slacker? No, you are a typical product of Generation-X.

Nope... I am right there with you... Except that I am in LA. The way I look at it... I have known nothing else but work and study ever since I was 15 (I'm 25 now). We already have paid our dues... now it's time for us to enjoy the fruit of our hard work. So kick off your Bruno Magli's (or Ferragamo's), put your feet on the mahogany oak, call your assistant to bring you another Diet Coke, and enjoy. We have earned it!!!
Your fellow MBA
p.s. if we were slackers, we would not be having this discussion

I think that depends on what your goals are for your life. If your career is what makes you, then you should definately try to consume yourself in your career more. If you want to make more money, maybe try investment banking. HA ha. But I think it sounds like you're happy with your job and what you do at it so I don't think you're being a slacker. I would say many people don't completely devote all their time and energy into work while they are there, so don't worry about it. Do you feel like you don't deserve the money that you make?

Most people will kill for a job and salary as yours. Take advantage of the free time, but try to find something productive to do. Is there anything you can do to improve your office setting? New spreadsheets, databases, etc.
If you're bored with your job, then I would seek employment elsewhere. I can relate to a job with no job advancement, but I get great benefits, and all the good Holidays off. Sometimes I feel like I'm wasting my mind away, but other times I'm glad to be where I am.

Wow... I think you just set yourself up for about a thousand "I hate your guts" messages. : )
I know a couple of people in your situation. You are content with where you are, but you can't help but feel you're kind of wasting your time? If you are still not sure what you passion is, what you really want to do or why you should be working your *** off instead of just taking it easy ... try to better yourself in some other way. Learn a language, get more education, etc. Eventually you'll move on to more challenging things.

Ask yourself if there is a higher purpose in life for you. Most intelligent people will not be happy just surfing the net and drawing pay. You need intellectual, emotional, and spiritual fulfillment as well as a paycheck.
