How can we get rid of English lager louts and their infantile primatism?
Panorama last night showed how beer and football have fused to create a subculture of degenerate yobs, who bring shame to football and to their countries. It's not just England that harbours these halfbreeds, Germany and Holland create them too, but the English seem to create a malevolent vitriol that exceeds any one else.

I partied with the Italians in Piccadilly, and they were wonderful company, I would think twice before entering an English crowd.

I believe that these people are empty-headed, dissatisfied, mis-educated and ignorant, as well as being utterly selfish.

So, what can our society do.

PS watch the answers carefully...they may indicate what we English have to put up with in terms of ignorance.

The world cup did present us with new football holigans, but these were not English holigans. But were these holigans reported widely in the media? Well hell no just a handlful perhaps. You see mud sticks and English fans are always perceived as lager louts and holigans. This is such a shame for the real die hard fans are really striving hard to shed themselves of the name of larger louts. Many of them at the world cup made positive strides in repairing the bad name of English fans abroad. They also joined in the merriment with football fans from other countries and worn the England Flag with pride, without hurling abuse.

However, there will always be an element of so called football fans who cannot control their football drinking habits and will always hurl abuse an other football fans.

You ask what can be done to rid our own society of such hooligans well it must start in the schools with education, education, education. Educate our youngster to have pride in their country. Educate them on how to behave. Educate them that football is a spectator sport to be enjoyed by all and not should not be blighted by louts full to the gunnels with alcohol.

It was great to watch the other footablling nations enjoy the football without brandishing any alcohol.

Well if anybody knew what to do, it would have been done! I think the main problem is sentencing. As with all crimes i think sentencing and prisons are no deterrant whatsoever.

The police need more freedom to do their jobs properly, rather than be bound by procedural rules etc. Maybe give the ambulance and hospitals teh power to refuse to treat not only abusive patients, but also patents that they have little doubt was involved in illegalities eg two men come in bleeding noses, cuts on their faces, most probably a street fight, turn them away, clean up their own mess. Alot of them just havent grown up mentally. Remember in school when the 'cool people' were generally the loud mouthed dimwits that picked on everyone. These people are still in the same mind frame as that. Its cool to be obnoxious, apparently.

Stiffer penalties by the courts. Sling these yobs in jail for a few years.We have no deterent over here, muggers ,shop lifters, thieves,joy riders, etc etc. know the system and know they will get away lightly. The ones that are caught by the police are sent to court ( sometimes a year later ) only to be released with fines, community service and the like.This then undermines the job of the police force. If a few of them were sent to jail for 5 to 10 year (serving the full term ) them perhaps this would be the start of cleaning up Britain of these useless lay abouts.

how stupid are you - you have been taken in with all this media crap. the programme last night looked at a minority causing trouble and not the overall picture of the world cup experience. it is not just the english fans who got into scrapes and this world cup was really well behaved. i think maybe you need to allow people to do their own thing or leave the country i hear china has a good discipline record. maybe you would prefer to live in a dictatorship - you sound the type.

as an irishman this will seem a surprise but its the truth it's only a small amount of fans who cause trouble. there is only way to deal with morons like football thugs of all countries and that is send in snatch squads, take out the ring leaders round a nice quiet alleyway and kick the bejesus outta them. german cops were crap at the world cup. english thugs may think belfast is part of their patch, try it in belfast and they'd go home in a body bag. no liberal policing is the answer. bash em up hit em hard send em home dead!.
