I believe our water is a bit rusty. Which in turns makes our whites a bit dingy, no matter how much bleach I use. Are there an tricks or solutions to use in the everyday wash to make and keep whites white? I have heard of using vinegar or Oxyclean. Have you tried it? Does either work?

Mom had a well she switched to from city water but when she had to go back to city water it was rusty colored from the pipes. She used bleach in her good whites and they turned yellow. She used a cup of white vinegar in the load and it took all the yellow out. From then on when she does her whites she adds white vinegar...No Bleach...it just causes more problems.

If your hot water is dingy you probably need to drain your water heater from years of sediment, could be you need a new rod that corrodes to keep your heaters metal pieces from corroding. Also, why not put a whole house water filter on your incoming cold water line? it will keep all the lines filled with cleaner water. This could only cost 50 buckks, and well worth it, You have to change the filter now and then but once you see t he benifits in the shower, laundery, taste it, you'll wish you did it sooner.
Good luck

I use Sunlight laundry detergent with whitening in it. I don't know exactly what the whitening is but it does work. There's also a product in my area called "Iron Out" that works on white clothes to get rust marks out. We have terrible water in my area and I've used this product. You might want to test it on a hidden spot first to make sure it won't hurt the fabric. Washing sodas like the one made by Arm and Hammer are good alternatives to bleach also.
