Panorama last night showed how beer and football have fused to create a subculture of degenerate yobs, who bring shame to football and to their countries. It's not just England that harbours these halfbreeds, Germany and Holland create them too, but the English seem to create a malevolent vitriol that exceeds any one else.

I partied with the Italians in Piccadilly, and they were wonderful company, I would think twice before entering an English crowd.

I believe that these people are empty-headed, dissatisfied, mis-educated and ignorant, as well as being utterly selfish.

So, what can our society do.

PS watch the answers carefully...they may indicate what we English have to put up with in terms of ignorance.

what a great question! wonder at this myself, but by all accounts even in the midd,le ages the english were binge drinkers who were rowdy and violent. i come from a welsh town that has the worst pub violence in the uk.
the town is full of drinking places and all ages and both sexes go there to get "wrecked"..its horrible and i fear for the kids i teach in the town, the parents and even grandparents are proud of the ability to drink!!!!! i dont get it!
it goes beyond being happy or sociable it leads to all kinds of depravity.. like gin lane in hogarths day, i get the kids to look at hogarths etching and draw their own present day version. i ask them to comment on the work and compare it to present day Newport.its really interesting for them and me..i think education may help, especially when our whole culture is aimed at this hedonistic lifestyle.
i agree with you about italians, their culture is that it is very frowned upon to be drunk and violent in public..
strangely the best places i have ever been are 1. sweden- where alcohol is prohibitively expensive and very family orientated, lovely people very civilised yet not religious
2.UAE where alcohol is strictly controlled, being a muslim country ,its also very family orientated and people are very polite and there is very low crime.

the beer was always there , but the football, mob mentality where footballers are seen as role -models are the biggest problem. the boys i teach especially, but girls too, copy the behavour of cheating and shamming and arguing with the ref.or authority(me)
we need good ,role models of people who play fair, work hard and still have laugh and enjoy their lives.
there are so many great things about our country and its becoming a horrible place to live because of this..
i have to believe in education because its what i do...
challenge their beliefs, make them realise that its not good or cool to live for now in this selfish way..they could be creative and get self -esteem and pride from it..
my dad is/was an alcoholic and seen the damage that it does on families so i speak from my heart when i try to educate kids to be responsible when they drink..
sorry for the rant but i feel passionate about this!!!!

Thats right! Blame the bartenders!
Its not a new phenomenon, there've been yobs here for generations. The Romans were complaining about them as well. For most young blokes its a stage they go through. Unfortunately some of them get recruited into the more hardcore fringe stuff.
In other cultures they'd be sent off with a spear and told not to come back till they'd killed a lion, or they'd be competing in dangerous sports for kudos. Its a way of dealing with the testosterone and the aggression.

I'm not carrying a 'booze id' card just because some other idiot can't behave like a decent human being.

I entirely hear what you are saying, I went to a wine festival in Germany, everyone, all ages, enjoyed, drank and danced, NOT one problem. The German folks have something to be very proud of.

Unlike ours, I often feel very ashamed of some of our young folks Another example being the stupid antagonistic, anti-American questions given on here by obvious juveniles. Cowardly if nothing else.

I would sugguest :- Take away their passports for 1O years, (they may just have grown up a bit by the time they get them back, and appreciate the right to travel freely)

Then Boot camp, for all who have been found to caused problems at home or abroad - if they think they are tough, just let them try and prove it!

All these sad, bored lads with nothing better to do, need to find an occupation, what better then to re introduce CALL UP for all 17 years old for 5 years service.

This age group, could be considered young Warriors, and maybe that is just what they need to get this out of their systems?
In a more positive manner of course - by defending their country.

(sigh) Thanks, I enjoyed that VENT!

Unfortunately we have to continue to put up with them for the following reasons;

1) Riot Policemen will be laid off, without English hooligans
2) Paper sales will go down
3) Lesser reporters will be hired.
4) We will have to blame the Poles or Krauts, for misdemeanours.
5) The Tartan Army will no longer look like angels, if English fans are banned completely.
6) The Home Office wouldn't be able to waste taxpayers' monies like they used to, in putting up 'White Papers' on prison over-population.

Hell, they whole British economy will be affected without those drunken louts.
A question of economics, continue to put up with the bad, for the greater good.

I honestly do`do not know, they have tried to stop these people going to games played abroad, but its the home games, I suppose they could keep checking CCTV for the thugs, but then you have got the other people who are not Football Fans do not even like football, just like a punch up, do not worry about the damage they do to anyone, they have no morals, they are just drunken thugs, I only hope someone comes up with a solution, so decent people can go and ENJOY a Football game .

They like to brag that they created the gentleman's game but when they lose they become ugly.

P.S. I attended a match between AC Milan and Chelsea here in Philadelphia, U.S.A. back in August 05 and was in a predominantly AC Milan section. But there were a few Chelsea fans who were obviously drunk but well-behaved who were also entertaining as they bantered with the supporters of the red and black. All nationalities have their own poorest representatives as well as the good.

Stick them in Prison?

Murder them?

The REAL 'source' of this problem is the people who sell the alcohol to them.

One solution I've previously come up with / though of was to introduce a 'drinking card' that limits you to buying a certain amount of drinks per day, week, month or whatever.

You could only buy drinks for yourself and you couldn't get served without this card. This would also be a solution to prevent underage drinking too.

:-)
