Many lionfish have been conditioned by unthinking pet shop owners and aquarists to take only live food by feeding them only live food.

If he is small enough to see adult brine shrimp as food you can feed them to him. If he eats them OK, try mixing in some frozen brine shrimp to fake him out. Once he is eating the frozen food it will be easy to give him other frozen food.

If he is larger, you may have to try and switch him to frozen marine fish food. Don't feed him for 4-5 days so he will be hungry. Don't worry, fish can go for up to three weeks without eating and not be harmed. After 4-5 days, try thawing out a chunk of squid or some other frozen marine delicacy and dropping it in the water right in front of him. If he doesn't go for it, net it out and try a few more times. If he still won't eat, you may have to wait a few more days for him to get real hungry. Eventually he will try it and probably like it.

There isn't much nutrition in brine shrimp. Ghost shrimp would be the better choice, and you could gut load them with sprirulina prior to feeding them to your lionfish. When you put some in, add a few thawed mysis shrimp as well, it will slowly accustom him to eating frozen food.

use the brine shrimp to entice it to eat frozen food.what i mean is this....while feeding it live brine shrimp, try introducing frozen food at the same time.pet shops usually get fish that are wild caught, so they aren't accustomed to eating frozen.if a petshop sells only tank raised animals, they are usually the best petshops.tank raised livestock will usually accept foods that are frozen.
