after compiling a c prog in linux by gcc I get xxx.o. on giving gcc xxx.o i get a.out. How do i run it now?

run a.out
you could try
./a.out
or if you're uncomfortable running a .out file, specify your output file when you run gcc:
gcc -o myProgram.exe xxx.o
then you can run myProgram.exe
