I see how to make this trip via Interstate, but I wonder if any of the smaller roads that have a more direct route would be preferrable.

Houston to Austin. Take US 183 to Brownwood. Take US 84 from Brownwood to Abilene. Some really nice country! Be safe.

You are better off staying on the Interstate. Driving through all of those small towns can add a lot of travel time onto your trip. If you are wanting to take your time, you can try 290 to Hwy 6, go through Waco, to Interstate 20 and then head west to Abilene.
