My 5 month old daughter is trying to crawl, but seems to only be able to go backwards by scooting. She pushes her body up to "push-up" position and scoots back when she lowers herself. She has been doing this for about 2 weeks. How do I get her to go forward? I've put toys in front of her too.

Most babies start crawling around 7 or 8 months. She'll do it on her own.

Five months sounds about right. Our little girl is just getting into position to crawl now, and she's just under 5mo. Your daughter will do it soon enough, and keep putting things in front of her, she'd manage.

But I wouldn't get too stressed about it. Our son never crawled at all - he moved himself about by shuffling (at great speed sometimes!) on his bottom. He would sit upright, and scoot about to wherever he wanted. Then he stood up, then he walked. Never crawled once before he could walk. He's a bright little 3yo now who is completely mobile and alert. What I always say is, did you ever meet a 20 year old who hadn't got the hang of walking (using a cup without a lid, sleeping without a nappy/diaper, etc)? Every child manages everything in its own time. Don't worry.

It takes babies a little while after they learn to scoot before they start crawling...I'd give it about a month or so before she starts going in the correct direction

She's getting there. But it depends on the child on how soon they crawl. And by crawling I mean--hands and knees getting around. My first crawled at 7.5 months. She was just content playing with things in front of her. My second crawled...like hands and knees--at 6 months. He was more motivated by keeping up with my daughter. And my last one crawled around 6 months too.
