Here are a couple classics that might be hard to find: We Shook the Family Tree, and Auntie Mame. Both books are hysterical. I also enjoy the series called A series of unfortunate events because even thought they're kids books they are a lot of fun. Two other great books (and kid books) are A Long Way from Chicago and A Year Down Yonder-- once again, well written and very, very funny. It makes you wish the main character was your grandmother.
If you want something more serious or meaty, The handmaid's tale is perfect.

Have you ever read Kathy Acker?
Try "Blood & Guts in High School. She'll knock your socks off.
If it's she's little too gritty for ya,
try Angela Carter's "The Bloody Chamber".
Or, Muriel Spark's "The Driver's Seat".
Or, Clarice Spector's "The Hour of the Star".
All short, but good. Non romantic. Sense of humour? That depends on you, I suppose.
Oh, and the funniest book I've read, "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris. Laugh out loud funny!!

King Fortis the Brave about a pair of twins that are pulled into a magical realm and caught up in the battle against a wicked sorceress that is trying to overtake the land. Two great girl characters in Aimee (one of the twins) and Gillian (a warrior they meet along the way). A great book full of action and humor that I found hard to put down!

If you haven't read any of her books yet, Janet Evanovich's series with Stephanie Plum is as funny as anything. It's a fast easy fun read, great characters, slightly raunchy.

Once you read one of them, you'll start looking for the others, and they're all good.

I'm currently anxiously awaiting the eleventh book in the series, Eleven On Top, which my Mom is mailing to me from the States (I'm in Ghana).

You can visit Janet's website and read an excerpt of her novels there, so you can decide if it's your taste or not before you spend your money.

Buddha Da by Anne Donovan. If you can get past the glaswegian style of writing, it is a cracking book. Or "Marley and Me" by John Grogan. the first book is fiction, the second is a guys memoirs about things that happened in his life after he bought an out of control Labrador. Both very funny at times and at others very moving, but still light enough that you can knock out a couple of chapters whilst on the plane or sunbathing by the pool.

Anything by Susan Wiggs is what you're looking for. Her books have some romance, but a great storyline too. 'Table for Five' is good as well as 'Summer at Willow Lake'.
I like something that takes me a while to read it, so last time I went on vacation I took 'England' by Edward Rutherford. It took me a month to read it, just finished it in time to come home. It's a bit heavy at first, but once you get into it, it's a great read.
I've just finished reading 'The Dublin Saga' - same author.

Check out one of the The Cat Who ... series by Lilian Jackson Braun. She mixes small community stories with crime. It's really good. The heroes and also the detectives are a retired journalist and his two Siamese with detective instincts. I enjoyed two of the series very much (as I have only 2 of them). They're a real page turner. You just can't put it down.
