The term originally comes from the French Assembly, where liberals sat on the left side of the room and conservatives sat on the right side. Hence "left wing" means liberal, while "right wing" means conservative.
In practical terms, the conservative party represents the wealthy and the business interests in a society (the "haves" if you will), while the liberal party represents the poor and working class/labor interests (the "have-nots").
As such, liberals generally attempt to bring about progressive change, including a more equal distribution of wealth, while conservatives generally want to keep things the way they are.

I don't understand why, but it is generally said that "someone on the right" is considered a conservative and "someone on the left" is generally considered a liberal.
Conservatives supposedly believe in smaller government, trickle down economic theory, privatization, and lowering taxes.
Liberals supposedly believe in a more involved government, direct funding social programs, public services, and generally will increase taxes.
Some people think there is more than just right and left. There is personal freedom and economic freedoms. On this scale conservatives value economic freedom over personal freedom, and liberals value personal freedom over economic freedoms. Why can't you value both? Well you can. For example libertarians (not liberals) value both.
People that are kinda in the middle are called moderates, or centrists.
Personally I belive more in personal freedoms than economic ones. But I value economic freedoms probably a little more than a liberal.
Hope that helps.
