If you mean Transsylvania in Romania: is a wonderful area and from Bucuresti airport you reach it within a few hours of driving.
From where the heck in the world do you have to start that you hesitate? Come here, it is worth it .... I am from 2000 km west Germany, but since May 2005 I live in Romania ... and I enjoy it ..... you are lucky, that you might have a Romanian root here, I still have to build up mine.
(But if you are male: don´t come from Transylvania another 500 km east to Constanta/Black Sea .... the Dacian girls at Litoral coast might disturb your family planning completely.)

If they are paying for the trip I'd go.
If you are worried just take plenty of garlic, crosses and holy water.
Remember it's not polite to stake your in-laws on the first meeting.

My husband's family is in Syria and I'm willing to travel to visit. So why wouldn't I go if they were in Transylvania.
