Talent and perseverance. Perhaps a dash of good looks does not go astray.

Well its gonna be alot of work. I don't know how old you are so I'll start at the beginning, specialise as early as you can. Do Media Studies at college and then a degree in Film and Television Production (the best University courses are Film and TV Production at Westminster, Film and TV Production at Bournemouth) Surrey Arts Institute offers a Television specific degree where your final piece is a half an hour TV pilot but the course overall is less prestigious, similarly Middlesex Uinversity has a degree in Television Production. However, while you are doing these courses, and even before, use your own initiative to make films by yourself, get your friends to act, these will help you get a place on such courses. At the same time join www.shootingpeople.org where you can search through jobs everyday, available to beginners and industry professionals, these jobs are great because you can build up contacts and get more work in the future, very good if the people you help out on their student film become higher up and can give you a better job later. Once you've got your degree (even if its not in TV) and experience you can look at jobsites for all the different TV channels/networks, you may have to start low and work your way up but you've got more chance with TV specific qualifications and experience. Also get a copy of Spotlight and write/email 3rd ADs telling them you're keen to help out on their latest project, they may ask you along (my friend got a job on Harry Potter that way). Good luck!

As for an actor just follow the same websites as mentioned above, they have casting calls on them too, plus get an agent and headshot etc!

If you want to be an actor, start acting. If you want to be a director, start directing. Take a class. Write a short film. Be in plays. Make friends with rich and powerful people.
