Have a really bright teenager living with me who is estranged from her parents. She's likely to get straight A in Maths, Chemistry and Biology and maybe going to study medicine. She has no support except from us and we can't support her through university at all. She'll be 20 this November. She is a dual national American and Belgian, although she's lived here for ten years. She's also racially Jewish.

Where can she get grants to get her through medical school?

Fill out the FAFSA form- available on-line or at your local public library. This is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Then, the results of the form should be sent to the colleges of her choice. She may qualify for grants through this program. (based on need)

Other sites to explore:

fast WEB ( Financial Aid Search through the Web)
www.fastweb.com This site has a number of resources including everything from a free scholarship search (fastSEARCH) and college information to career planning tips and financial aid calculators.

FinAid! The SmartStudent Guide to Financial Aid
www.finaid.org
Loans, scholarships, grants and military aid are covered as well as forms and instructions for applications. FinAid! also has calculators to assist you in finding out how much to expect to pay for your education.

www.collegenet.com
CollegeNET allows students to apply to over 1500 college and universities on line as well as search for scholarship and financial aid information.

Also- the colleges and universities she applies to will have financial aid offices and officers. The staff there can help her apply for grants, etc. Each college and university may have grants and scholarships specific to that institution. For example, an alumna may have donated money for a young woman of the Jewish faith going into science. (something like that).

Also- go to your local public library and ask the staff to see the college and university sections on scholarships and loans. There may lots of stuff in those resources that will get you going.

good luck.

Like any other school, Med schools offer support based on need and on merit. A friend of mine did so well in college that she was offered a totally free ride to the U of Iowa med school for a 5 year program that got her both an MD and a PhD. She finished with both, no debts, and money in the bank. How much your friend gets depends on how good she is.

Most MDs get out of med school with huge debts. Which is OK since they'll be making a huge salary.

By the way, I didn't realize Jewish was a race. Are you racially Christian? Or racially Baptist? Just wondering.

If she was living in England, she could go to a bank who do Student Loans, which then get paid back after study and once they start earning over £15k a year. OR in some instances (depending what type of medicine she would go into over here) a bursary from the government.

Studying in America.................... can't help you on that one. Sorry.

There are lots of financial aid for studying at university such as grants and student loans, especially for people studying in areas such as medicine, apply to the universities as usual via UCAS (University and College Admissions System) and as far as i know they will tell what loans and grants you are entitled to. I know this as I am applying to universities this year.
