what's the class? what level? how long the paper?

the best topics for a research paper are the ones you are really into and already know a bit about. example: for my first college english research paper i picked dolphin communication, more specifically, the possibility that they have language. This worked out great because I love dolphins and know a lot about them, and because i got into the research independantly of the paper, so it was not a chore to work on it.
picking something you already know a lot about allows you to go much deeper in your reseach because you'll be asking all the right questions as you go along. so the first question is, what kind of stuff are you into?
now, in those areas, what are some controversial topics? if you're into surfing, you might find that there is a lot of debate as to which is the best beach, if you're into basket weaving, it may be all about the benefits of oiling your wicker, or whatever. whatever you field of interest, you don't have to look very far to find some topic of controversy. pick one that you are interested in, so you can make it interesting...
i'm going to take a quick look at your profile and see if your questions and answers will give me a clue as to what interests you.

One of my favorite papers was for an Anthropology class during my undergrad. It traced the migration of western African religion into the Americas via slavery and how the religion merged with Catholicism to make today's Voodun/Voodoo, Santeria, etc. Very cool, interesting topic. Was a pleasure to research. Not sure how it fits into a "both points of view" format. If it has to be a subject with polar views... maybe discuss something like pros/cons of socialism. There is a lot of interesting history to review and some modern policies in Europe are based on a loose form of socialism.
