I have a whole lot of freckles, too, hun. Personally, I wouldn't use a self-tanner since it will look obvious and fake. Go for your own natural beauty.
I'd recommend that you stay out of the sun. I've stayed out of the sun (i.e. I don't go swimming until 5 o'clock when the sun is less intense) for three years now, and my freckles have lightened up incredibly! It's amazing, really.
Now, if you spend some time out of the sun, it will help, but here's another tip (especially for your face). In order to have a glowing and almost freckle-free face, put Ponds Cold Cream on your face before bed a few times each week, and slap it on whenever you get a sunburn or have been in the sun for a while. It'll hydrate your skin, lighten freckles, and help your skin even out.
Now, once you have stayed out of the sun for a while and your freckles have lightened, go ahead and use some self-tanner. Remember, though, moderation is the key, and make sure that it is a light tan (looking like you've just come back from a month-long beach vacation is NOT the key here). Keep it natural and beautiful. I'm sure you'll do fine.
Here's to hoping you find a great self-tanner!

your freckles will come out no matter how you get a tan, either naturally or with enhancers...
Go for the natural look. Your freckles won't stand out as much because you will be getting a tan with shades of brown, as opposed to orange.

It'll make the freckles AND the surrounding skin darker...can't get one without the other.
I like L'Oreal's Sublime tanners...they don't make me too orange.
