Wild_Fury1 gives good info. To add to that: Try not to bring a ton of stuff. Especially if you're only going to be here a year (but we were going to be here for 2, and we're still here!). Sell or store most things in mom's basement. Be brutal in how much you thin stuff. Don't bother bringing formal clothes! A lot of people come and go so there are a lot of garage sales to look for anything you didn't/couldn't move.

Try to have a job lined up for at least one of you. And have your research done on who hires in your industry, etc so you can get on your feet quickly. Seek out social, religious or activity groups that meet your tastes so you'll make connections quickly.

Post again with a specific location if you have one. There's the Anchorage area and then there's the rest of the state (which is over twice the size of Texas).

Be prepared for a long winter (try to get outside in the sunlight every day) and a fast-paced summer.

Be prepared for the long winter esp if your not used to the cold. There will be long days (no sunset) in the summer and long nights (no sunrise) in the winter. That takes alot to get used to. Other than those two drastic changes its a great place. Oh and the cost of living is alot higher, budgeting money if you are not used to things being a little more expensive.

What city are you going to be in? Anchorage is the largest city (about 250,000 people). It isn't too much different from other cities its size. Other cities of course are much smaller and things are a little different there. The weather in Anchorage isn't as bad as people make it out to be. Of course if you are from the south it will be a big change for you. Let me know what city to live in and maybe I can answer more questions for you.
