When I was a librarian we did one of two things. If it was a new book, less than a year old, we would order it. If it was an older book we would get it through something called Interlibrary Loan. All libraries do this-send books to each other for patrons. Just ask in the reference department (or children's if it is a juvenile book).

You should be able to make a request for the library to purchase the book. However, you must take into account budgets and if there are other purchases the library must make, so you could be looking at anywhere from 3 months upwards for the acquisition to be made. You're more likely to be successful if more than one person requests a book. Some libraries may be able to borrow a book on loan from another library if they belong to a group, which would be quicker and less expensive.

The librarian should have a form for the patrons to fill out to suggest titles for them to buy. But this does not guarantee that they'll buy it. Also, if you can't find it in any store, it may be out of print, in that case, the library won't be able to buy one either. Have you checked out used book websites?

Request it everyday... Hve your friends and family call and ask for it... Once they obtain a certain number of requests they will purchase ate least 1 copy of the book.
