I take the grills out of the machine to clean them, mine remove rather easily and are made of a teflon coating over cast iron. Sometimes if there is burnt on batter, I put them in a skillet bring them to a boil and the burnt on matter loosens. On the bottoms, I often get overflow batter on the cast iron and that really helps remove the gunk. If only the teflon needs cleaning, I soak them in the sink in hot water and dish detergent, I use a stiff plastic brush to loosen the gunk between the bumps and rinse.

Plug it in.
Place it in a sink full of water and scrub it hard with a metal handled wire brush.
Don't mind the tingling sensation you may feel.
It only takes a little while to come clean.
