For example, my best friend, V, was complaining she is fat and she has a great body. I could bench press her!

well some people have such low self esteem even if they work on themselves n their appearance and if there is a relative or sumone close to them that tells them something wether it b a joke or not then that person will take seriously and not be satisfied with the way they look, i used to b this way, many people said wow yu look awesome and when i look in the mirror i said yuk! but actually my esteem was low and the way my step family treated me made me even harder on myself..so actually the person needs to look deep inside themselves and try to change and pretty soon they will appreciate how they look n be happy at least they r healthy n alive.. :) but it dont hapen over night it takes sum time, and if yu can find a someone to help yu along the way it makes it easier and faster..

My opinion....your friend is very much aware of the fact that she looks great. She's just using the complaints as a ruse....she's actually fishing for compliments.

It's never enough. Look at rich people, they have boats and cars they will never drive but still haggle about picking up the bill amongst their friends.

She has a very poor self image...it's sad that she feels that way...she's looking for reassurance from her friends that she's okay outside because she doesn't feel good inside.

several reasons for this:
1. they are really seeking compliments
2. they want to make others look bad
3. they have a distorted body image--dysmorphia (mental illness)
4. they are too self-absorbed to think about anything else
5.lo-selfesteem
i think i gave you several points to ponder....
