You're immune system (white blood cells) weeds out potential infections, diseases, viruses and allergens to keep you from getting sick. If you have a poor immune system, either from bad genes or an illness, you will be more prone to allergies and infection than someone with a strong immune system.

If you did not have an immune system you would not have allergies. Allergic reactions are related to the production of antibodies (typically IgE) from specific immune cells in response to the presence of a molecule that the immune system recognizes as "foreign" or non-self. There are many molecules that are not part of "self" that do not normally cause allergic reactions but for those who have allergies it is because they have developed an inappropriate hypersensitivity to the allergen.

Allergies are hypersensitive responses by the immune system to certain allergens.
The most common allergies involve antibodies of the IgE class.
A common example of an allergic response is to that of pollen.
Upon 1st exposure to the pollen B cells (an immune cell type) develop into plasma cells that secrete IgE antibodies specific for the pollen allergen.
Some of these antibodies bind by their tails to a mast cell.
Upon the 2nd exposure allergen binds to IgE already on the mast cell triggering "degranulation" of the cell. Cellular granules release histamine, leading to most of the symptoms of allergy eg dilation and increased permeability of small blood vessels.

our immune system functions primarily to recognize any foriegn entities and eliminate them by various mechanisms like phagocytic cells, antibodies and enzmyes. this mechanism is enabled by recognition what is foreign and what is self and harmless, but if the immune system due to some genetic condition, disease or trauma mounts an immune response to substances which are non pathogenic in nature like allergans( pollen grains, dust) then allergic symptoms are seen.
further allergies r divided into 5 groups( type1-5) based on their nature, reaction & symptoms.
