Best manager I had, and that I always tried to emulate helped his subordinates develop skills that were sought after at the company. At the same time, he would pimp us subordinates around for promotional opportunites that were always great opportunities for us at the company. He wasn't a shoulder to cry on or didn't send flowers when we had our first born, but he did actually keep track of us and what we were interested in, at the same time isolating us from some of the political hazards that can effect a work team from outside.

A good analogy to his personality, and a good study of a great management style is Ernest Shackleton and his failed expedition to the South Pole.
