IMHO, the song reminds me of a "cult/church" and many assume it's about drugs, but this is what an "expert" says...
The song really isn't about anything according to Glenn Frey. His quote from a radio interview a few years back was: “we were listening to a lot of Steely Dan records at the time and were impressed with the way that they could make ‘junk sculpture' lyrics about nothing and make them work into a song.”
The song is a great narrative tale about decadence (pink champagne) and mysticism (a spooky dungeon-like house) and even botany (the smell of colitus!), but it certainly has no realm in fact.
Don Felder brought the rough guitar track to Henley/Frey and asked them if they could do anything with it. This is unusual in that songs by them were typically written the other way around. It serves as an interesting note that further proves that they did some serious ad-libbing and probably got the booze and drugs flowing before they wrote this song.
The album on the whole is all about the southern California lifestyle at that time (Life In The Fast Lane, Last Resort) and shouldn't be looked at in any other way.

Hotel California is a nice song. But u all have to take a deep look at what they talk abt. Have u ever heard about the word "Fornication"? Thats what the song is all about. Gettin into drugs. U know what is colitas..? Colitas is a spanish word which means little bud. Colitas could have been derived from 'colas,' the tip of a marijuana branch, where it is more potent and with more sap. Lotsa ppl give lotsa interpretation to this song. But its ALL ABOUT MARIJUANA!!!!

There is a rumor that "Hotel California" is about an actual place in California where they practice devil worship. I have a friend who lives in central California and drives a truck for a living, and he made a delivery to a place in Santa Barbara that he said looked like one of the old Spanish missions. He said he felt "drained" when he was unloading the truck (he's a devout Christian) and when he got done, a woman invited him inside. He heard them chanting "Hail, Satan! Hail damnation!" and got the f**k out of there. Makes you wonder -- Don Henley wrote that song and he grew up in Ventura, about 20-30 miles from Santa Barbara...

Don Henley in an interview joked that he did it as a lark just to hear what people would try to make of it. It was partly a dream he had but a great deal of it was just added as the ideas flowed. Supposedly "colitas" is a spanish word that refers to a flower on a marijuana plant but since few english speakers knew that he thought it would pass but leave speculation as to its real meaning. It seems to have worked because years later people everywhere are still asking, "What does it mean?"
There might be some allusion to things real with the beast you can' t kill being some of our bad habits we cant shake, or the "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" might be a reference to the wife of a close friend who died by suicide.
But mostly it was supposed to leave people guessing and Don still has fun knowing that there are hundreds of interpretations of his words.

yeah the song is about being addicted to drugs. It shows how appealing drugs are and how wonderful they make you feel, but also shows the scary side of it and how hard it is to stop. "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
